Despise the Free Lunch (unless it’s food related)

There’s a dangerous myth in Hollywood that is synonymous with broken dreams.

The starving artist.

Somehow, creatives have been conditioned to believe that passion should replace payment. That if you really love your craft, you should work for free, wait indefinitely for “backend,” or accept vague promises of future riches that rarely arrive.

I’ve watched talented writers, producers, filmmakers, and actors pour years into projects built on enthusiasm instead of structure — only to leave exhausted, unpaid, and disillusioned.

Passion matters.

But passion without boundaries becomes exploitation.

One of the biggest lessons I learned navigating the entertainment industry is this:

If someone truly values your talent, they must value your time.

And if you value someone else’s talent, you pay them fairly, too.

That principle alone eliminates many future misunderstandings, resentments, and betrayals inside creative partnerships.

One of my favorite books, The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, has a law called:

“Despise the Free Lunch.”

Because what is offered for free often comes with hidden obligations, unclear expectations, or invisible costs.

Free is rarely free.

The truth is:
What is valuable is worth paying for.

By paying your way — and expecting others to respect yours — you remove guilt, manipulation, and ambiguity from the equation.

Professionals understand this.

Amateurs romanticize struggle.

The entertainment business is hard enough already. Stop building careers on deferred dreams and unpaid labor while everyone else around the project gets compensated.

Artists deserve sustainability too.

For those seeking a deeper lens on creativity, resilience, and the business behind the dream, An Insider’s Secret: Mastering the Hollywood Path is my invitation to a richer conversation — where mindset, strategy, and imagination meet.
