The Cannes Film Festival is not a Lottery Ticket

This article originally appeared on my Substack: https://alexiamelocchi.substack.com/p/the-cannes-film-festival-is-not-a

Every year, creatives from around the world arrive at the Cannes Film Festival with excitement, ambition, and a belief that this will be the breakthrough moment.

And every year, many leave with the same realization:

They misunderstood what Cannes actually is.

After more than three decades working across international distribution, production, and global film markets, I’ve seen this pattern repeat itself.

Cannes is not a place where careers magically change overnight.

It is a place where prepared people meet opportunity, and unprepared people get lost in the party crowd.

The First Truth: Cannes Is a Market

There’s a romantic idea that Cannes is about discovery.

In reality, it is a high-level business environment where:

• meetings are scheduled in advance
• deals are already in motion
• decisions are made quickly

If you show up without a plan, you are not early in the process.

You are late.

The Biggest Myths That Hold People Back

“I’ll meet the right people once I get there.”
Most of the right people already have full schedules before they land.

“My project will speak for itself.”
In fast-moving conversations, clarity beats complexity every time.

“If I get into the festival, everything will change.”
Visibility helps—but without strategy, it rarely converts into business.

The Costly Mistakes I See Every Year

1. No clear positioning
If you can’t explain your project in a sharp, compelling way, the opportunity disappears quickly.

2. No understanding of the buyer
A distributor, a producer, and a financier are not listening for the same things.

3. Confusing presence with progress
Being at Cannes is not the same as building a future in show business.

4. Waiting for Cannes to create an opportunity
The most successful people arrive with conversations already in motion.

The Reality No One Likes to Admit

Most deals discussed at Cannes?

They didn’t start there.

They were already being negotiated.

Cannes becomes:
• the place to finalize
• the place to accelerate
• the place to confirm

What Actually Works

The people who succeed at Cannes don’t rely on chance.

They rely on:

• preparation
• clarity
• targeted relationships
• strategic timing

They understand that Cannes is not about chasing opportunity. It’s about being ready when it appears.

Final Thought

Cannes can absolutely change the trajectory of a project or creative.

But not because you showed up.

Because you showed up ready.
